CopyLeft and CopyTheft

CopyLeft CopyLeft is an open-licensing concept that allows for the completely free usage, modification, and distribution of code and ideas generated by human beings. In essence, it removes traditional restrictive boundaries—you do not need explicit permission or a conventional license to use the material.

CopyTheft (A Mutually Binding Engagement) CopyTheft is a stronger, mutually binding extension of this philosophy. The consequence of utilizing "copythefted" software is that once you use it, any software or intellectual property you subsequently develop must become freely accessible to the original providers of the copythefted material. It creates a tight, unbreakable mutual engagement where mutual openness is mandatory.

Historical Note: The specific formulation of CopyTheft in the context of biological data sharing (BioLicense) was independently conceptualized and suggested by Jong Bhak around 1995 at the MRC Centre on Hills Road in Cambridge, England. This philosophy heavily influenced the early licensing approaches of projects like BioPerl and the BiO centre.
