0. In one sentence. This work is openfree: all property claims over it are given up, worldwide and permanently. Use it for anything. No permission, no fee, no conditions.
1. What it covers. The work it is attached to: text, data, images, and code that the licensor made or holds rights in. Where a work mixes covered and uncovered material, only the covered material is released.
2. The waiver. The licensor irrevocably waives, worldwide and for the full term of protection, all copyright and neighbouring rights in the covered material, including database rights, and dedicates it to the public domain. No permission is required for any use, commercial or otherwise. No fee is owed. No condition attaches.
3. Fallback. Some countries do not permit a complete waiver. Where section 2 is ineffective for any reason, the licensor instead grants an unconditional, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, copy, modify, distribute, perform, and sell the covered material for any purpose. Where even that is ineffective, the licensor undertakes not to assert the remaining rights.
4. Moral rights. Rights of attribution and integrity cannot be fully waived in Korea and many other countries. The licensor does not assert them and will not enforce them, so far as the law allows. Authorship is a fact and is not transferred by this licence.
5. What it does not cover.
- Third-party material. Nobody can release rights they do not hold. Quoted text, licensed images, and incorporated software stay under their own terms.
- Personal data. Where material contains or derives from identifiable personal data, including human genomic data, use is governed by the original consent and by data protection law. This licence authorizes nothing that consent or law does not permit, and nothing here overrides those obligations.
- Trademarks and names. No right is granted in "BioLicense", "openfree", institutional names, or logos.
- Patents. No patent right is granted or implied by this licence alone. See the software note below.
6. No warranty. Provided as is, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. So far as the law permits, the licensor is not liable for damage arising from use. Data may be wrong. Verify before you rely on it.
7. Norms. Requests, not conditions. Nothing in this section binds anyone. Ignoring it breaks no rule and carries no penalty. It is how we hope the work will be used.
- Name the people whose work you build on, in the way your field normally does.
- Say what you changed, so the next person can tell your work from what you started with.
- Pass it on under the same freedom, if you can.
- Report your errors when you find them. A correction is worth more than agreement.
